Surigao City, Philippines: travel guide
Mindanao's ferry port for Siargao and the caves of Bucas Grande
Capital of Surigao del Norte and the mainland Mindanao gateway to Siargao Island, with fastcraft and RoRo sailings from Surigao Base Port plus overnight ferries to Cebu. Also the jumping-off point for the Bucas Grande / Sohoton Cove caves and lagoons.
About Surigao City
Surigao City sits at the north-eastern tip of Mindanao, facing the Surigao Strait. It is a working port town more than a resort, and most visitors pass through on their way to Siargao Island, which is reached by fastcraft and car ferry from the main port.
It is also the starting point for trips to Bucas Grande Island, where Sohoton Cove has caves, lagoons and a famous jellyfish sanctuary. The town itself has a waterfront, markets and simple seafood restaurants, and overnight ferries link it with Cebu.
Surigao City suits travellers on an island-hopping route who want to break up the journey. The drier months of March to May are the most reliable for sea crossings.
