Jaffna, Sri Lanka: travel guide
The Tamil cultural capital of the north, with temples, a fort and fiery cuisine
The cultural capital of Tamil Sri Lanka in the far north — the sacred Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, the Dutch-built Jaffna Fort, a distinct spicy cuisine, and the historic Yal Devi rail line.
About Jaffna
Jaffna lies in the far north of Sri Lanka and has a distinct culture shaped by Tamil traditions, which shows in its architecture, language and cooking. It feels quite different from the south of the island.
The Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is the main religious site and is a lively, colourful temple. Jaffna Fort, built by the Dutch, and the Public Library are other landmarks, while Casuarina Beach and the islands nearby, including Nagadeepa, can be reached by road or boat. Food here is spicy and seafood-rich, and crab curry is a local highlight.
It suits curious travellers who want to go beyond the usual circuit. The drier period from about February to September is usually easiest for travel.
