Ha Long City, Vietnam: travel guide
Gateway city to the limestone islands and emerald water of Ha Long Bay
Located on the country's northern coast, this is the main launchpad for exploring the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay. The city itself balances modern tourism with rich maritime heritage.
About Ha Long City
Ha Long City is the modern base on Vietnam's north-eastern coast from which most visitors reach Ha Long Bay, the UNESCO-listed seascape of limestone islands rising from emerald water. The city itself is a resort-style waterfront with a harbour, hotels and a busy pier.
The real experience is on the water. Boat cruises of a day or an overnight stay thread between karst towers, with stops at caves such as Sung Sot and Thien Cung, kayaking around floating fishing villages, and a swim or a climb to a viewpoint on Ti Top Island. Back on land, Sun World Ha Long offers a fairground-style evening.
It suits first-time visitors to northern Vietnam, couples and families. Spring and autumn usually give the clearest and most comfortable weather for cruising.

Safety and scams to avoid
Unlicensed Budget Cruise
Ha Long Bay boat operators
Cheapest cruise packages (under $30/person/day) frequently operate unsafe vessels with poor food, inadequate life jackets, and non-existent environmental standards.
How to avoid it: Choose cruises licensed by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism. Budget minimum $80–100/person/night for reliable operators. Check TripAdvisor recent reviews.
Overpriced Seafood on Board
Ha Long Bay cruise boats
Cruise operators charge inflated prices for seafood ordered onboard outside the set menu, or restaurant stops on islands overcharge for drinks and snacks.
How to avoid it: Check what is included in the cruise price before boarding. Bring your own water and snacks for the island stops.
