Phu Quoc, Vietnam: travel guide

Island of long beaches, night markets, fish sauce and sunset bars

Vietnam's largest island — a tropical paradise of turquoise waters, white sand beaches and dense jungle in the Gulf of Thailand. Home to world-famous fish sauce, fresh seafood night markets and Vietnam's first cable car to the An Thoi archipelago.

About Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is a large island in the Gulf of Thailand, off Vietnam's far south-west coast, rather than a town. Its west coast has long sandy beaches, such as Long Beach, while the quieter south-east is home to the white sand and clear water of Sao Beach.

The island is known for its fish sauce and pepper farms, and the night market in Duong Dong is the place for grilled seafood. You can ride the Hon Thom cable car across the sea, visit the Sunset Town and Kiss Bridge area, take a boat trip to nearby islets, or snorkel the reefs. Much of the island is forest and national park.

Phu Quoc suits beach holidays and families. The best time to visit Phu Quoc is generally the dry season, from about November to April.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Gem Investment Scam

    Near Duong Dong Market

Friendly locals invite you to their "gem wholesale shop" claiming you can buy gems to resell at a profit at home. Gems are fake and worthless.

How to avoid it: Never trust a stranger who approaches you with a business opportunity. All "gem investment" pitches in Vietnam are scams.

  • Seafood Weight Overcharging

    Duong Dong Night Market

Live seafood is priced by weight; the vendor places a finger on the scale or uses uncalibrated weights, charging 2–3× the actual weight.

How to avoid it: Watch the weighing process carefully. Ask the price per kg before ordering. Use restaurants with set menus or confirmed per-item pricing.
