Bali, Indonesia: travel guide

Island of rice terraces, sea temples and surf from Uluwatu to Ubud

The Island of Gods — a paradise of terraced rice paddies, spiritual temples, pristine beaches, and a perfect blend of culture and tourism.

About Bali

Bali is an island of Hindu temples, terraced rice fields and long coastlines, and few places in Southeast Asia pack in so much variety. Daily offerings and ceremonies shape the rhythm of life, whether in the hills or by the sea.

On the cliffs of the south, Uluwatu Temple looks over the surf, while Tanah Lot sits on a rock just offshore. Inland, Tegallalang's rice terraces, Besakih and the lake temple of Ulun Danu Beratan show the island's spiritual and agricultural heart. Beach days, yoga, surfing and cooking classes all fit easily into a Bali itinerary.

It suits couples, families and independent travellers alike. The dry season from April to October is the most popular time to visit Bali.
