Buon Ma Thuot, Vietnam: travel guide

Coffee capital of Vietnam, in the Central Highlands

Vietnam's coffee capital — gateway to Dak Lak Province's plantations, elephant conservation in Yok Don National Park and Ede/M'nong ethnic minority culture. Home to the World Coffee Museum (opened 2023).

About Buon Ma Thuot

Buon Ma Thuot is the main city of Dak Lak province in the Central Highlands and the heart of Vietnam's coffee country. Red-earth plantations surround the town, and the local brew is stronger and darker than you may be used to.

The city's coffee village and the Trung Nguyen museum are a good introduction, and the countryside holds waterfalls such as Dray Nur and Dray Sap, the lake at Lak and villages of the Ede and M'nong peoples. Yok Don National Park is known for its elephants and forest. It is not a classic sightseeing city, but it rewards curiosity.

It suits coffee lovers, nature travellers and those interested in minority cultures. The dry season from about November to April is the most comfortable time to visit.
