Con Dao, Vietnam: travel guide

Remote island group of turtle beaches, coral reefs and quiet forest

Vietnam's most pristine island archipelago — 16 islands 230 km south of Ho Chi Minh City. Con Dao National Park protects sea turtle nesting beaches, coral reefs and old-growth forest, alongside the historic French colonial prison complex.

About Con Dao

Con Dao is an archipelago of small islands off the south coast of Vietnam, with one main island, Con Son, where almost everyone stays. It is a protected area, and much of the land and sea is national park, so the feel is calm and unhurried.

Beaches such as Bay Canh Island are known for nesting sea turtles, while the coral reefs offer good snorkelling and diving. Forest trails cross the interior, and kayaking in Dam Tre Bay is popular. The island also has a painful history, and the former prison complex and its museum and cemetery are central to understanding it.

Con Dao suits nature lovers, divers and those looking for a quiet escape. The best time to visit is usually the dry season from about March to September.
