Hai Phong, Vietnam: travel guide

Northern port city of French-era streets, seafood and the road to Cat Ba

Vietnam's third-largest city and most important port, gateway to Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha Bay. Known for French colonial architecture, vibrant seafood and proximity to Cat Ba National Park.

About Hai Phong

Hai Phong is the great port city of northern Vietnam, and its main role for visitors is as the gateway to Cat Ba Island and the Lan Ha Bay area. It is an authentically working city rather than a resort, with a layered street plan and a distinct local character.

The French quarter has colonial buildings such as the Opera House and the cathedral, while pagodas and communal houses like Du Hang and Hang Kenh show an older side to the city. Seafood is excellent, and the local crab noodle soup is worth trying. Do Son Beach is a seaside area a short distance away.

Hai Phong suits travellers heading to Cat Ba and those who want to see a Vietnamese city that is less visited. Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant seasons.
