Hue, Vietnam: travel guide

Vietnam's imperial capital of citadel walls, royal tombs and river pagodas

The former imperial capital is a deep dive into Vietnam's royal history. Situated along the Perfume River, it is home to a massive UNESCO-recognized Imperial City, royal tombs, and ancient pagodas.

About Hue

Hue was the seat of the Nguyen emperors, and the city still feels shaped by that royal past. Its great Imperial Citadel, the Dai Noi, sits behind moats and walls on the north bank of the Perfume River, with gateways, halls and gardens to wander through.

Outside the city, the tombs of Tu Duc, Minh Mang and Khai Dinh each show a different taste in imperial architecture, and the seven-storey Thien Mu Pagoda looks over the river. Hue is also known for its refined cooking, from bun bo Hue to small, delicate royal-style dishes, and Dong Ba Market is the place to sample it.

Hue suits history lovers and food-minded travellers, and it pairs well with Da Nang and Hoi An. Spring is usually the most pleasant season to visit.
