Pekanbaru, Indonesia: travel guide
Riau's modern provincial capital and base for Malay heritage sights
Sumatra's Oil City — a modern city known for oil industry heritage, mosques, and gateway to Riau island attractions.
About Pekanbaru
Pekanbaru is the capital of Riau province in central Sumatra, a modern, spread-out city on the Siak River. It is rarely a destination in itself, but it gives an easy introduction to Malay culture on the island.
The Balai Adat Melayu Riau is a cultural hall that reflects local architecture and customs, the An-Nur Great Mosque is a striking landmark, and the Sang Nila Utama regional museum sets out the province's story. Pasar Bawah is the place for local snacks and shopping.
Pekanbaru suits travellers passing through Sumatra and those heading on to the Riau coast and islands. Weather is hot and humid year-round, with the drier months from June to September the most comfortable.
