Raja Ampat, Indonesia: travel guide

Remote island archipelago in West Papua, famed for reefs and karst islands

Remote archipelago off West Papua with the planet's richest coral-reef biodiversity and karst-island seascapes.

About Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is an archipelago off the northwest tip of West Papua, made up of hundreds of forested limestone islands scattered across clear water. It is a region rather than a town, reached by boat from Sorong.

Its reefs are among the most celebrated in the world for diving and snorkelling, with sites such as Cape Kri and Friwen Wall. Above the water, the viewpoints at Piaynemo and Wayag show the karst islands in their full drama, and villages such as Arborek welcome visitors to see local life.

Raja Ampat suits divers, photographers and travellers happy with simple stays and boat travel. The drier months from October to April are generally the most popular for calm seas.
